Recently, a friend from the Contact Improvisation (CI) community shared how she's come to appreciate the way CI connects her with people from different parts of the world.

Her words reminded me of my own experiences of dancing CI while living in France. Even within a welcoming community, I sometimes found myself in a liminal space between languages, cultures, and different senses of belonging. On the dance floor, I found a sense of home without needing to explain where I belonged.

I hope that dancers from abroad can experience a similar sense of connection and belonging through CI here in Japan.

Thinking about this brought me back to a short poem I wrote during that time. I've included it below, just as I originally wrote it.

when mouth (口) opens

to speak her mother tongue

a sense of home is lost

there, her skin is other

here, a powerful stranger

movement, sole savior

dansez tous les jours, partout!

she felt she belonged

everywhere and nowhere

all at once
